Rick continued to operate his business while earning his degree in Landscape Horticulture which he received from Alfred and Morrisville State Colleges. The business began growing in earnest and the name was changed to “Pro Scapes” to better fit the professional, high quality work Rick and his staff were committed to. At this time, the company’s basic services expanded to include parking lot sanding/ salting, parking lot sweeping, and tree and shrub pest control. Accounting and record keeping were computerized in 1985 and the lawn fertilization and pest management department were added by 1986. During this period, snow payloading and snow hauling were added to the list of available winter services. Pro Scapes incorporated in 1987 and moved to its present location, the site of the old Titus Farm, in Jamesville, N.Y. in May of 1988.
From the early days, Rick, recognized that knowledge, attention to detail, and continuous staff training and development were vital ingredients in providing high quality service and achieving customer satisfaction. Computerization of record keeping in 1985 enabled the company to track customer requests, work instructions, job performance and billing in great detail, making it possible to deliver high quality services, monitor results, and enhance crew training programs as needed. Data tracking and analysis are continually upgraded in order to improve customer service.
Pro Scapes Inc. has grown, from its modest beginnings as a boy’s after school job in the 1970’s to its present day status as a leading grounds care provider in Central New York due to the vision of its founder, the dedication of its employees, and its commitment to excellence. The company is proud of its rich history and confident of its future.
Pro Scapes Inc. began as a one-man residential landscape and snowplowing operation started by owner and founder, Rick Kier, during his high school years in the mid 1970’s. By saving his proceeds earned from doing odd jobs, shoveling, and just about anything someone would pay a 15 year old to do, he was able to purchase his first pick up truck, complete with plow in 1978. By the time he graduated from Jamesville-Dewitt High School, he had a growing company known as “Rick Kier Summer and Winter Services”. He had a fleet of three trucks and had hired some of his classmates to help serve his expanding customer base of neighbors and local community folks.
In the 1990’s, mass flower plantings and aquatic pond and lake treatments were added to the company’s service offerings. The company also began to shift its focus away from residential business to concentrate on providing year-round grounds care services for commercial customers and condominium complexes. Today, Pro Scapes Inc. continues to provide lawn fertilization and Irrigation services for residential customers, but it has found its niche providing high quality grounds maintenance and snow removal, and irrigation services for many distinguished commercial properties and upscale condominium complexes in Onondaga County.
In 1994, Rick became an active member of ALCA, a national trade association for landscape professionals, in order to exchange knowledge and experience with other landscape professionals from all over the country. In 1996, he was instrumental in forming The Snow and Ice Management Association (SIMA), a similar trade association for snow removal experts that has grown to a present membership of over 1,500 members from the snow-belt regions of the USA and Canada. Members of the Pro Scapes management team continue to attend annual conventions of both associations to gather new ideas and increase the level of knowledge and expertise the company can utilize to better serve its customers.
Pro Scapes’ philosophy of striving to make sure its customers are completely satisfied has paid off. To this day, no matter how big the job, the customer is viewed as a neighbor in the CNY community and is given personalized attention. The goal of delivering top-quality grounds care services with a customer first attitude provides momentum for the management staff and crews to continue to learn and grow and improve their expertise and performance.
